Here is my review and home video of how to hook the MagicJack to your home phone system:
This video is of the line quality test. 1 meg DSL over wireless phone system
I had seen the MagicJack on a television commercial a few months back.
It looked interesting, but since it was late at night and when you are dozing
off a lot of things look interesting. Plus many years ago I had tried a service
that let you make free phone calls from your computer anywhere in the US. I even
went out and spent $40 on a quality headset with a built in microphone because
free long distance was just what I need to change me life. But then the reality
of day to day use came in. In order to make a phone call I had to be sitting
next to my computer and you know what?
Sometimes I do not like sitting
next to the computer to make phone calls. Add to that the quality was very
sketchy at best - I soon ended up with a worthless set of $40 headphones. If you
can remember all of the way back to the internet bust of 2001 you will recall
that there were several companies that were going to change the world by
offering free long distance service. I never quite figured out how they were
going to make a lot of money giving it away. Since none of them exist today - it
looks like they never figured it out either.
I then heard in a MagicJack review
it was actually pretty good. Then I heard that MagicJack offered a FREE 30 day
trial of the product. They do not even charge for shipping and handling. Being a
"techie" (I qualify as a techie because I hooked up my own DVD player)
- I thought this would be cool to test out and if it sucked, I would not be out
anything..
I was blown away. I was so blown away I put the video
together so you could actually see the ease and hear the quality here in Iowa
(a.k.a. middle of no where). What I was blown away by was not just the quality.
Lets face it - cell phones have lowered our expectations of quality in the phone
world. But, as you saw by my home made movie, the strengths are
really what they do not show you in their ads.
- You get a phone number
assigned to you located in your area code. Face it, making calls is only half
the fun. If you want to "disconnect" from the phone company
completely you do need to have a number for people to call you. This is included
with the MagicJack at no additional charge.
- You get
free voice mail. No need to stand next to your phone all day.
People call your MagicJack number and you are not home - it goes to your private
voice mail. And the voice mail works when it is not hooked up to your computer.
- Portable. This is the best of worlds and one of the
other reasons it blows Vonage away. The MagicJack is smaller than a cell phone
battery and weighs about the same. Unhook this from your home phone; throw it in
your laptop bag; check into your hotel and instead of paying those ridiculous
fees hotels charge to make even a local call, you now make free calls over their
free internet. As far as the phone - I simply unplug the phone in the room and
plug into the MagicJack.
The other beautiful part - is when you hook up
to a computer anywhere in the world and someone calls your assigned MagicJack
number - your phone rings. There are a lot of uses for this thing if you put
your mind to it. You can use it as a primary line for the house. Need a teenage
line or a separate business line in the house? You will not get your phone
company to install a 2nd line for this price!
And I would never advocate
anything immoral or unethical, but say you wanted a line for totally private
calls that there would never be any phone bills or records of and had your own
private voice mail. If you were to ever need this type of
discretion than this is the perfect device. And cost? Less than
$20 a year and that includes the MagicJack. Totally blows Vonage out of the
water for price and functionality.
